Catching up on the 2011 Season …

Posted in 1 on June 9, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

We are well underway, with two tournaments, a game, and a scrimmage behind us.  The Barbos are very young this year after losing almost an entire backline and work commitments this year, but new players are filling in nicely.  Mother Tucker was a great tourney, with a couple of wins and a couple of losses.  We showed throughout that we can ruck and control the ball but need to work on transitioning from offense to defense.  A shorthanded team lost to a very good Golden Bears team the following week in our first league game, and that was followed by a scrimmage against the rebuilding Dragons on the following Tuesday.  A tourney and two games in 10 days left many on the injured and recovering list for the Maulerfest tournament, which as far as Zak can remember was a pretty good time.

It’s been a tough first two weeks, and we are healing up and getting some trainings together to improve for our next meeting with the Tbirds on June 14.  As always, thanks to our sponsors McGinleys Irish Pub, Guinness/Odom Corporation, Kasmar/Slone, and Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria.

Merry Marmot this weekend

Posted in 1 on March 28, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

The Merry Marmot is this weekend at Arctic Valley … and Ted has a new friend!! This year Jess will join Ted to compete in the Downhill Dummy Launch.  Luke will join Monty in the kayak race (another dynamic duo), and there are additional kayaks available for two riders.  We won three free ski passes last year to give away, with one for an old Barbo, one for a new Barbo, and one for the tightest one-piece ski suit.  Bring your skis, bring your beer money, and sport your Barbo-best.  The even starts at 11am, with activities all afternoon culminating with the Dummy Launch at 5:30pm.  There is a costume competition at 6pm, and anything is fair game.  Jason won last year as the Dirty Bunny.

If you want more info on the Merry Marmot   http://www.skiarctic.net/

On a more serious note, we’re going to start running in the next few weeks ..  if you’ve done nothing all winter, get going now ..

Also, Alaska Rugger is our Facebook page. It’s a good place to get informal info on what is going on with the club.

Frozen Oosik this weekend …

Posted in 1 on February 23, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

the 2011 version of the Frozen Oosik is this Saturday, February 26th on the Park Strip (10th & M) at Noon.  A more-blind-than-normal referee, penalty shots … followed by visits to downtown establishments and our favorite rugger-bartender Tony Lopez at Sub-Zero.

St. Baldricks & the Wolfpack

Posted in 1 on February 8, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

From Fred Koski …. if you are interested in participating or sponsorship, let him know. Mark’s golden mane went to Locks of Love earlier this year.

Hello everyone!

It’s St. Baldrick’s time again! For those of you that don’t know St. Baldrick’s is a foundation that helps to raise money for Childhood Cancer research. Volunteers raise money by agreeing to shave thier heads in a show of support for kids with cancer (who often lose their hair as a side effect of treatment) at a local event. The Soldonta event will be on March 19th, 2011 at Soldotna High School.

The Kenai River Wolfpack Rugby Club had a team at last year’s event where 5 of us shaved our heads and I would like to see if we can get even more people signed up this year. I am putting the call out for volunteers to shave thier heads at the Soldotna event. Our team goal this year is to raise $3000. If you are interested just go to stbaldricks.org , look up the Soldotna event and register yourself (don’t forget to register as part of the Rugby team).

Each year over 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide. Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the US and Canada. Research saves lives, so lets do our part to help. Email me if you have any questions.

Insurance for 2011 Season

Posted in 1 on January 27, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

The Barbos will be providing accident insurance this year – in the past, we’ve had a few players injured without insurance, and the policy offered by USA Rugby is cheap enough that it’s crazy not to buy the policy. More info at www.usarugby.org (look for “accident insurance” on the sidebar). The cost is $200 for the team – and we need to register the team for USA Rugby for an additional $150. If you can pay your dues now, get them to Iain – same as last year, $100 returning players, $50 for new players. We’re in the process of setting up a PayPal account to take payments and will send out an email when it’s done.

New Sponsor!

Posted in 1 on January 20, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

We’ve got a new sponsor!! Hal is an oldboy Mauler and he has opened up a gym on the Southside. He’s offering a pretty good deal for ruggers – usual rates are $55/month without contract and $40/m with contract, but Hal is extending a great deal. Show your current CIPP and get membership for $32/month with no contract, signup, or initiation fees. Be in shape for this season early and support a fellow rugger.

Polar Plunge Recap

Posted in 1 on January 5, 2011 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

15 Barbos participated in the 2010 Special Olympics Polar Plunge in December, raising over $5,600 to support Special Olympics in Alaska. Ted Snider and Tim Mraz were our top fundraisers, and we were 7th out of 165 team in total funds raised. The Bird Creek Barbarians would like to thank everyone who generously gave to Special Olympics on our behalf, and we’re looking forward to next year!!

Barbo Christmas Party this weekend!

Posted in 1 on December 7, 2010 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

The 2010 Barbo Christmas Party is Saturday, December 11th at the home of Cam & Shannon Vivian, 7pm to closing.

This party is for the entire Barbo family … significant others, kids, friends, assorted groupies. Santa will be there, as will one of his reindeer. Parents, bring wrapped presents for your own kids and Santa will hand them out.

Fall Tours international rugby on TV, hanging with your fellow Barbos, Santa, and a betting pool on which participant in the Polar Bear Plunge will suffer the most shrinkage. I don’t think you’ll be able to plan for a better holiday party.

Posted in 1 on November 11, 2010 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

The Barbos (well, Ryan Erwin and his goat) got some international exposure in the Golden Oldies newsletter. A classic Erwin pose was featured from the Kenai game … image and link below.

Posted in 1 on August 23, 2010 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

He has watched old people to make sure they don’t die in their sleep. He drives like he is in a demolition derby. Sometimes he just starts bleeding. He lives today, though he was born in the 1500s in the Ukraine. He is our Francis.

Francis is leaving to go to California. Join us tonight, Monday August 24th at McGinley’s Pub, 7pm, to remember all things Francis.

A long July, and a better August

Posted in 1 on August 11, 2010 by Anchorage Alaska Rugby-Bird Creek Barbarians

It’s Oosik Month. The tournament is August 21st and 22nd … and we are starting to play much better. The rookies are hardly rookies any longer, and we are getting our working players back more full time. Our trainings are looking much tighter, and we have two weeks to prepare for the tournament. Get to training Tues/Thurs 6:30pm … if you haven’t been out in a while, it’s never too late. Even for Mike White.
